The Amsler Grid Eye Test

The Amsler Grid may be helpful in revealing signs of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It is no substitute for regularly scheduled eye examinations from your doctor.

Because of the nature of computer monitors, you should use a printed Amsler Grid. Click on the grid to the right to download a PDF of an Amsler Grid.

Directions:

  1. Do not remove glasses or contacts normally worn for reading
  2. Hold the grid approximately 13 inches (just over 1 foot) from your eyes in a well-lit room
  3. Cover one eye with your hand and focus on the center dot with your uncovered eye
  4. Repeat step 3 with the other eye

If the lines appear wavy, broken, distorted, blurred, or missing it may be a symptom of wet AMD. You should contact your eye care provider immediately.
